A. lower airways

B. throat

C. nasal

D. sternal

The answer is B: “throat” Stridor occurs because there is narrowing of the larynx and trachea which can happen due to swelling from an infection or blockage from an object etc. This sound is located in the throat area.

5. The nurse notes stridor in a patient. What characteristic below would best describe how this sound presents?

A. screeching or squawking

A. A patient with congestive heart failure.

B. A patient with pulmonary edema.

C. A patient with epiglottis.

D. A patient with COPD.

The answer is C. Epiglottitis is inflammation of the epiglottis (which is found in the throat in front of the larynx). Stridor is occurring because there is narrowing of the larynx and trachea due to swelling from an infection or blockage from an object etc. In the end, it can lead to a completely blocked airway.

7. True or False: Some cases of stridor are considered a medical emergency and require immediate treatment.

The answer is True. Severe cases of stridor can actually block off the airway due to narrowing of the larynx and trachea. Medications can be given IV or nebulizer route to decrease the swelling so airway narrowing does NOT occur.
