What Is Ladin Sign?
Ladin sign is a probable sign of pregnancy that occurs around 6 weeks of gestation. It refers to a softening of the anterior midline portion of the uterus near the uterocervical junction.
The sign is named after Dr. Louis Ladin.
Key Features of Ladin Sign
- Occurs at approximately 6 weeks of pregnancy
- Characterized by a soft, compressible area on the anterior uterus
- Detected during a bimanual pelvic examination
Caused by:
- Increased vascularization
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Softening of uterine tissues
Why It Happens
During early pregnancy, increased blood flow and hormonal stimulation cause the uterus to become softer and more elastic. This softening creates the characteristic area felt during the pelvic exam.
Type of Pregnancy Sign
Ladin sign is classified as a:
- Probable Sign of Pregnancy
- This means the finding suggests pregnancy, but it is not definitive because similar uterine changes can occur in other conditions.
How Pregnancy Is Confirmed
Because Ladin sign is only a probable sign, additional testing is required to confirm pregnancy:
- Detection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) through a pregnancy test
- Ultrasound, which provides positive evidence of pregnancy
