Goodell’s Sign (Early Pregnancy) Nursing Maternity Review

For nursing maternity exams, you want to be familiar with the early signs of pregnancy. This review will cover Goodell’s Sign.

What is Goodell’s Sign?

It was named after an American gynecologist called Dr. William Goodell. Goodell’s sign is an early probable sign of pregnancy characterized by softening of the cervix due to increased blood flow.

When does it occur?

About 4–8 weeks of pregnancy

Why does it happen? (Cause)

Increased vascularization (blood flow) to the cervix Cervix changes from firm = soft, pliable, gel-like

Pregnancy Sign Type:

  • Probable sign of pregnancy
  • Suggests pregnancy but is NOT definitive

How is pregnancy confirmed? (Definitive signs)

  • Positive hCG test (urine or blood)
  • Ultrasound visualization of fetus
  • Detection of fetal heartbeat

Memory Trick:

  • Goodell = “Good and soft cervix”
  • Think: cervix becomes soft and squishy (gel-like)

NCLEX Key Points:

  • Occurs at 4–8 weeks
  • Cervical softening
  • Increased blood flow causes change
  • Probable (not diagnostic) sign of pregnancy
