Will Hospitals Pay For Nursing School?

Will hospitals pay for nursing school?

That’s a great question. Many nursing school students find themselves struggling to finance their education. In fact, many potential nursing students decide not to go to nursing school because they fear they simply cannot afford the tuition.

Fortunately, there are many ways to finance your education, and many of those ways do not have to even be paid back. One great way to help afford nursing school is getting a local healthcare employer (such as a hospital) to pay for your tuition.

Hospitals Paying for Nursing School

Hospitals typically pay for nursing school through a program such as tuition-reimbursement. Why do hospitals and healthcare employers do this? Typically to retain good workers, especially when there is a shortage in an area such as nursing.

With employer tuition-reimbursement, the employer will often have certain requirements (or even a contract) which dictates the standards that must be met in order to be eligible. For example, some hospitals will reimburse a percentage of tuition for a certain degree (such as nursing). This could be 100%, 75% , or any amount they decide to offer.

Also, many of these programs pay for tuition with the requirement that the nurse graduate work for a certain number of years for that organization (ie, for 5 years or 10 years).

If you do not meet the requirements, they may force you to repay some of the tuition they paid on your behalf.

In the hospital I work for, they will pay for a nursing undergraduate degree (such as an ADN or BSN in nursing). However, they rarely pay for advanced degrees such as a Nurse Practitioner degree.

Again, this can vary depending on the institution offering the program, and also the demand for certain positions within the organization. If there is a very high demand, for example, of nurse practitioners, then they may begin offering a tuition program for that.

Is Tuition Reimbursement Worth It?

Tuition reimbursement programs can be a wonderful way for a nursing student to realize their dream and graduate with a degree in nursing. They program is great for those currently working in a hospital or health organization that is willing to sponsor them to obtain a higher degree.

Since there are certain restrictions or expectations, this program may not be ideal for all nursing students. Some may be better off seeking other scholarships or financial aid. Ultimately, every financial situation is different, so each nursing student should weigh the pros
