What Type of Stethoscope Should a Nursing Student Get to Use? Registered Nurse RN

Hey Everyone,

I received an “ask me a question” and this question comes from Stephanie and here is what she asked:

“Hey Girl!
I’m starting the program to become a nurse this May. With all this talk about perfect starter scopes, I am wondering what you chose as your first stethoscope. Are Littmann’s really all that great? If so which one did you choose? Just curious on what someone who has BTDT has chosen.

THANKS!”

What Type of Stethoscope Should Nursing Students Use?

Stephanie, thank you so much for your question….so sorry about the delay. School has sucked all my time lol and I suppose you know how I feel or soon you will. First of all, congrats on starting nursing school in May.

This is a great question because it is really important that you get a stethoscope that will last you. I bought my stethoscope about two years ago and it is awesome. I bought a stethoscope by “Prestige” and it has great sound.

I totally understand about all the talk of how Littmann are the best but I have used a Littmann stethoscope and I really can’t tell the difference in sound quality compared with the Prestige.  However, this could be due to the way my ear canals are formed? Littmann stethoscopes are pretty expensive.

Littmanns are about $50-60 brand new. To me a stethoscope is a stethoscope and if you can hear heart, lung, and bowel sounds with it who cares if it a fancy Littmann. Some may say that the Littmann stethoscopes last longer and are better quality which may be true but I can buy tw0 Prestige stethoscopes for the price of one Littmann.

I LOVE my Prestige stethoscope and if it does ever tear up I will buy Prestige again. So I recommend getting a Prestige to help you save money….since you will be a student and all. Then if you really want a Littmann buy one once you start working or request it as a graduation present lol. Amazon.com has some great deals on Littmann and Prestige stethoscopes.

Links below are where you can see what the different stethoscope look like and where you can buy them:

Thank you so much Stephanie for your question and I hope I helped you out. Goodluck in school and keep me posted on how everything goes. If you ever have any more questions don’t hesitate to hit me up. I love to see other nursing students out there 🙂

Until next time,

Sarah 😉
