Hey Kimberly! Welcome to the site! Great question! I think it would be okay and in the scope of practice for a LPN to make 48 hour discharge calls with the understanding that the LPN is working under a RN (who will have to verify the work of the LPN) and the LPN has a protocol to go by in case questionable circumstances arise. In my state, TN, we actually have the clerical or nursing assistant do the follow-up calls but they are very basic calls that don’t go into detail about health but the hospital stay itself..
However, for me and others to better answer your question what does the 48 hours discharge call contain? I have obtained a scope of practice decision tree that the state board of Nebraska has put out regarding scope of practice decisions. http://dhhs.ne.gov/publichealth/Documents/Scope%20of%20Practice%20Decision%20Model-revised%205-08.pdf

It depends on questions the LPN would ask but either way I think it would be in their scope of practice. Basically LPNs are regulated strictly on IV drug administration, completing assessments must have an RN sign off), restraint implementation, etc.
