Should I go to Nursing School in Houston or Austin Texas?

I live in Houston, TX and want to go to school in Austin, TX. Is it good to stay in Houston for nursing school or go to Austin, TX?

    Hey Jackia,

You have several options for nursing schools in both areas. Houston is about 2.5 hours away from Austin depending on traffic and other factors. I think it really depends on you, your finances, and what type of program you are looking for. Are you wanting to go attend a nursing program with an associates or bachelor’s program and are you wanting to do the traditional program where you go Monday-Friday during the day or nights and weekends. In addition, are you wanting to go part-time or full-time. These are really important factors you must consider when selecting a nursing school.

In addition, when you are trying to decide if Austin or Houston has the best nursing program you need to ask the nursing department the following questions because this will tell you if they have a good program or not: “What is their NCLEX pass?” and “What type of accreditation does their nursing program have?”. I recommend you compile a list of nursing schools in both areas and email them with those questions and ask about what type of nursing programs they offer.

    I hope that helps 🙂

    Sincerely,

    Sarah

Hello my name is Latrice, don’t know where the right place is to start my career after nursing schoolI am currently in nursing school in Washington but I am also from Oregon just trying to figure out. I’m considering moving back home after school or California. Don’t know where I should start my career. If anyone has any ideas about those locations let me know thanks.

      Hey Latrice,

Congrats on almost completing nursing school! It is so exciting and regardless of where you decide to go you will have a great degree and job prospects. I know that California will pay you the most compared to the other states. According to BLS.gov the average salary for RNs is $98,000 with an hourly wage of $47.00 compared to Washington at $78,540 and Oregon $82,940. But of course you have to factor in the cost of living which it seems high in CA. For more information on state by state salaries see this page: https://www.registerednursern.com/registered-nurse-rn-salary-pay-wages-and-income-of-registered-nurses/

However, CA does seem to have better advocation for nurses such as safe patient to nurse ratios etc. I’m not sure about OR and WA. If I were you I would look at the available jobs in those areas. Here is a job search you go do through Indeed….just type in the location and position which would be “registered nurse”.

Check our job search box in the sidebar to see RN job openings in a particular area.

      Hope that helps 🙂

      Sarah
