Study Guide for NLN Exam Microbiology & Nutrition

Hi,

I will be applying to accelerated BSN second bachelors programs for next year. I plan to take NLN Achievement tests for both nutrition and microbiology, which are both pre reqs that I didn’t take in undergrad.

I’m looking everywhere for test prep books but it looks like my best choice is an NCLEX general review book. I just wanted to look around to see if there are subject specific test prep books or if going with the NCLEX review is my best bet.

Thanks!

-Alison

    Hey Alison!

Thanks you for you question. I looked everywhere trying to find a specific study guide for the micro and nutrition part of this exam and I was like you….one doesn’t exist. I found from the website from University of Massachusetts of Boston that a study guide doesn’t officially exist for these parts of the exam and they recommend just studying from a NCLEX guide (which you pointed out).

However, with my NCLEX guides I don’t remember specific sections for Micro and Nutrition. It mainly concentrated on specific areas of nursing like: OB-GYN, Peds, Mental Health, Pharmacology, Critical Care nursing and in each section it talked about micro and nutrition.

I would go with a prep guide for each subject. I was looking for some guides and came across these and they seem to be good study guides: E-Z Microbiology (Barron’s E-Z) & Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales: Nutrition & Diet Therapy (2nd Edition)

I definitely recommend the Prentice Hall Review book for nutrition. I have personally bought these books throughout nursing school to help me study (they have different subjects) and they are super helpful.

I would just search for these guides on Amazon.com by copying and pasting the titles in their search. I hope this helps you out and good luck on it. Thanks again for your question 🙂

Yeah NLN does NOT have a study guide for those areas. I think they should develop some study guides like HESI and ATI does. Your best bet is to either go with a study guide for microbiology and nutrition or the NCLEX exam.

Personally I think the individual study guides will be the most helpful but you will need the NCLEX study guide eventually. So whatever you pick will help you out.
