Babies are born with specific reflexes that tell us how well that nervous system is developing.

This review will quickly cover the Moro reflex, sometimes called the startle reflex (hence it causes a startled reaction from the newborn when assessed).

Moro’s Newborn Reflex Assessment

When does this reflex occur? It occurs when the infant hears a sudden loud noise or experiences unexpected movement.

• • Example: when a newborn is placed in the supine position (with the head supported) and the head is allowed to fall lower than the body this reflex will occur.
    • Response? the infant will throw out the arms (hence extend them) with the palms up and then move the arms back to the body.
  • It disappears by 6 months.
