Commonly Mispronounced Anatomy Terms for Nursing Students

As a nursing student, pronouncing anatomical terms correctly is important for clinical communication, patient safety, and exam success. Some words can be tricky because regional accents or informal pronunciations often differ from the standard medical terminology. This guide highlights common mispronunciations and explains the correct terms and their functions.

Upper Airway and Digestive Tract

Larynx – Located in the neck, it houses the vocal cords. Common mispronunciation: “larinks”. Correct pronunciation: LAIR-inks.

Pharynx – The throat region behind the nose and mouth, allowing food, liquid, and air to pass. Common mispronunciation: “fernx” or “farinks.” Correct pronunciation: PHAR-inks.

Duodenum – The first part of the small intestine, where digestion begins. Common mispronunciations: “duodinum” or “dadnum” (some regional accents). Correct pronunciation: doo-OD-uh-num.

Jejunum – The middle part of the small intestine, where most nutrient absorption occurs. Often mispronounced as “junum”. Correct pronunciation: juh-JOO-num.

Muscles and Structural Terms

Sternocleidomastoid – A neck muscle that rotates and flexes the neck. Common mispronunciation: “sternocclido mastoid”. Correct pronunciation: STER-no-kly-do-MAS-toid.

Parietal – Refers to the wall of a structure. Mispronounced as “pa-ree-tal”. Correct pronunciation: PAIR-ee-uh-tul.

Zygomatic – The cheekbone region. Mispronounced as “zygo-matik”. Correct pronunciation: zye-goh-MAT-ik.

Peritoneum – The membrane lining the abdominal cavity. Mispronounced as “paritonyium”. Correct pronunciation: PAIR-ih-toh-nee-um.
