Is Vocational School a Good Thing During High School When Wanting to go Nursing School?

Hello. I am currently a junior in high school and am very much interested in becoming a nurse. At my high school there is a program offered that allows a student to go to a vocational school while still attending four classes during the school year.

I plan on going to a four year college after high school, so would the vocational school be a good idea or should I just stay at my high school and take more AP classes? Help I need to choose my classes for next year and I do not know whether to take this vocational program or not.

    Hi Alexandra,

Great question and welcome to the forum! When I was in high school, I took vocational courses because they were actually nursing type courses. Vocational courses are more “hands-on” type classes…which is pretty much how the nursing profession is.

Do you have the option of taking both AP and vocational? I suggest if the vocational courses are nursing related I would take them to help you out in nursing school. However, I don’t know if you are aware of this because many people aren’t, many colleges accept AP high school credits as college credits. For instance, for AP English if you do well in it, they will accept this as a college credit and you will be excused from taking it in college. I would definitely look into this and ask your guidance counselor for the details.

But really it is totally dependent on what you want to do. It won’t hurt you if you take vocational courses but just make sure you are taking the required courses to get into the university of your choice with a nursing program.

    Good luck 🙂

What classes will you take in the vocational program? If they will help you learn nursing then may be you should but if they aren’t related to your career goal…I would pass on it.

Personally, I would stay in high school and take AP courses and try to get college credit for them as Sarah recommended but that is me.

My mom is a nurse and the best thing to do is to FIRST become a CST(certified surgical technologist, who hands instruments to the surgeon), then , when you become a nurse you are ahead of the game because you can work in surgery. labor and delivery, and pediatrics, and other invasive types of procedures. Learn lots of microbiology and infectious disease classes, and yes you need to learn basic math for drug dosage calculations.(drams/milliliters). You can never be too skilled because if you happen to get into a traffic ticket, or be the type who likes to drink, and drive, you still have the CST certification to fall back on. YOU MUST maintain good behavior or they will yank your license and then, how will you provide for your family or even yourself. I seen plenty people in the newsletter for TX get their license taken for minor offenses. It is best to focus on LVn/LPN next then do ADN, this will reduce your bill for tuition loans.
