Iowa to Illinois Nursing License Question

I am currently a registered nurse in Iowa and I am wondering how I can get registered in Illinois also.

This question was asked in the Nursing Forum Section.

These are always great questions because they can be really confusing. First you have to see if Iowa and Illinois are part of the nursing compact agreement. Iowa is but Illinois is NOT. In short the nursing compact agreement is where you can work in multiple states with just one nursing license making it where you wouldn’t have to apply for another one….hence saving you time and money. However, because Illinois is not part of the compact agreement you will have to apply for a nursing license in the state of Illinois. You will have to contact the Illinois board of nursing to get the appropriate paperwork. There will no need to re-take the NCLEX-RN.

Contact information for Illinois state board: https://www.registerednursern.com/illinois-board-of-nursing-board-of-nursing-illinois-il-information-registered-nurse-rn/

Nikki, are you going to be living there in Illinois? If so, you must apply for licensure by endorsement in the new state of residency. Your compact license (which is your Iowa nursing license) will be changed to a single-state license valid only in that state (which will be Illinois). You must notify the Iowa board of nursing that you have moved out of state. Here is a great article on nursing compact agreement:
