I HATE Nursing! I Quit! Do NOT Become a Nurse EVER!

If you have been online or talked to a group of nurses, chances are you’ve heard some of them express how much they dislike the profession and that they wouldn’t recommend it. If you’re a nursing student, you might be wondering, “Did I choose the wrong profession?”

Let’s explore why some people dislike nursing and leave the profession.

Is nursing a horrible profession? Yes and no! Nursing can be one of the most amazing and rewarding professions, but unfortunately, it does have a dark side.

Let me go over the top three reasons why people say nursing is a horrible profession and why they leave it.

3 Top Reasons Nurses Hate Their Job

The first reason is that the facility they work at is completely mismanaged. Whenever I say that, I’m referring to several things. One issue is the unsafe patient loads. They assign a lot of patients to individual nurses, which is extremely overwhelming and creates a bad situation. This leads to low job morale, as the staff is always stressed, doesn’t get breaks, and lacks resources to perform their jobs effectively.

The second reason is having issues with your co-workers and staff. Whenever you’re working in nursing, it’s important that you’re surrounded by a team of people who support you and work well together. This starts from the top with the manager. You want to have a good manager who is easy to work with and also a really effective manager. You don’t want one who is overbearing as that can make your job difficult. In addition, having co-workers who are lazy and don’t want to pull their own weight can hinder teamwork, leaving you stuck having to do everything all by yourself.

Then, the third reason has to deal with the specialty you choose. It just really wasn’t a good fit for your personality. Many times, when we first start out in nursing, a lot of us take the first job that we can get because we don’t have a big job selection. Some jobs want to hire people with experience and they don’t like to hire a lot of new grads.

So we end up having to take a job that usually doesn’t align with our personality. And then over time, we start to learn that this job is not for us. The truth is it really takes time as a nurse to figure out what you like and what you don’t like, what your talents are, and what you prefer doing in the nursing field.

Whenever you see someone ranting and raving about how horrible nursing is, I’m not saying that their experience is not real because they have lived through that experience and what they’re saying is true. You want to keep that in mind. However,  their experience may not or will not  be your experience. In addition, that person who’s having this negative outlook on nursing, their opinion may actually change over time, especially if they change jobs or do something different in nursing.

All Jobs Have Ups and Downs

Think in your mind right now, what’s an amazing job that would seem like it would be so awesome to have? Some people may say a model. Well, if you get online and read stories from  people who are models, you’re going to see that this job isn’t the greatest or easiest job out there. My point is, every job is going to have its downsides.

So is nursing as bad as people say it is? In some cases, it can be, but in other cases, it can be one of the most rewarding, fulfilling experiences that you ever have. Therefore, you just want to keep those things in mind.
