How to Become a Nurse Practitioner

hi.. my name is Tsering. I have completed my Masters in Nursing(medical surgical) from India. I have passed my NCLEX and I am a registered nurse. I want to become a nurse practitioner here. But I don’t know the process to be followed. I tried asking the CA BON, but they gave vague answers. So if anybody has done the same thing, please do guide me.

thanks…

Tsering

    Hi Tsering,

I hope I can give you some insight into your question. Sorry you couldn’t get a good response from the BON 🙁 In order to be a NP in the US you must have completed a masters in nursing with a concentration in family health or adult. The most popular is the FNP or ANP….most people go with a FNP (which is a family nurse practitioner). Then after that you sit for your NP boards which is called the ANCC Family Nurse Practitioner board certification. After that you can work as a NP.

I don’t think the masters in nursing in medical surgical will work for the NP program. HOWEVER, once you enroll in a program here in the US they may count some of your nursing courses you took in India. I would check with the masters program you want to enroll in. I hope this helps 🙂
