Do you have to complete your General Education to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing?

I’m 16 and want to get a start on nursing. I am going to study to be a Labor and Delivery Nurse. But, do I have to do my General Ed in order to get a Bachelor’s?

First off that is so great you want to become a nurse. I am a labor and delivery nurse and LOVE it. The best part of my job is helping mommies deliver that baby. It is so rewarding and it never gets old with helping those first time moms bring that baby into the world. You will love it. Once you work as an L&D nurse you will never want to do anything else.
I got my BSN (bachelors) and this is what I had to do.

I completed high school like you are doing. I just took the normal college path courses. Then I applied to a 4-year university with a nursing program. Make sure that the university you apply to has a nursing program that is important. Then after I got into the university I had to complete during my first two years of college regular general education courses like History, English, Fine Arts etc. When I was in my second semester during my sophomore year I applied to the universities nursing program and got in. I started the program during my junior semester of college and this is where I took nursing courses only and completed clinicals. Then I graduated with my BSN.

After I graduated with my BSN I had to take the NCLEX-RN exam. It is a licensing exam to practice as a registered nurse. After I passed the exam I got a job in a labor and delivery unit. There I was trained how to be a labor and delivery nurse. You will get on the job training to make you into a L&D nurse.

Valarie really hit the nail on the head in her answer so I won’t repeat it lol. Here is a great article on labor and delivery nursing:

Also since you are in high school wanting to prepare for nursing school. I recommend you check out this book because it is geared towards high school students wanting to go to nursing school cause I’m sure you have more questions about nursing school.

Yeah you will have to complete general education courses but there isn’t any special schooling you have to complete other than what a regular RN would have to complete in order to become a labor and delivery nurse. Just go to nursing school and pass the NCLEX-RN exam and then get a job in a birthing unit. Then presto you are a Labor and Delivery Nurse.
