Can a RN work as a LPN while trying to find a RN Job?

My wife has been an LPN for about 20 years. I have encouraged her to continue her education and pursue an RN license. The concern we have is that where we live there seems to be very few RN job openings. This leads to my question below:

In Minnesota, once she has her RN license would she be able to work in an LPN position at LPN wages until she found an RN job?

Thank you,
Dale M Olson

    Hey Dale,

I am pretty sure you can work as LPN while trying to find a RN job. They only thing is that your wife makes sure she doesn’t practice outside of the LPN scope of practice (although she is a licensed RN) because if something happened it could jeopardize her license. Also, tell her to make sure her employer doesn’t try to get her RN duties (I have heard of employers trying to do that).

That is CRAZY there are barely any jobs were you live for RNs. You need to come here to TN….we have LOTS of jobs. Where I work we are always working short because we need the extra help.

I know RNs who have passed their boards to be a NP and they are still working as a RN until they find work as a NP. However, states do differ on their laws.

For the best and most correct answer I would directly contact MN state board of nursing. Here is their contact information:

    Website:
    https://mn.gov/boards/nursing/?agency=NursingBoard#

Address: 2829 University Ave SE Suite 200
    Minneapolis, MN 55414

    FAX (612) 617-2190
