Experiencing a Dying Patient as a Nursing Student and Clinicals at the Nursing Home

This is my experience I had in a nursing home and with a dying patient as a nursing student. Thank goodness the third week of school is down and I have about 11 more to go 🙁 Thursday’s clinical (we are at a nursing home) wasn’t too eventful but it was sad. While me and my friends were doing our nursing care plan templates this nurse comes into the quiet room and tell us if we have never experienced seeing a pt close to death to go and check out this pt.

A Dying Patient and Nursing Home Clinicals

I have to say I wasn’t very fond of doing this. Number one: the pt is dying and should be left in peace. Number two: I would not want a bunch of students just coming into the room to look at me while I am dying. I felt very uncomfortable and I just wanted to get out of the room as soon as possible.

I even just wanted to burst out crying because it was really sad. I think what was really sad was that he was pretty much dying alone, and the only person that was in there was a nurse setting with him. I didn’t see any family or anything (very sad). I don’t do the whole death thing very well. I am very emotional about it.

Also, I think it brings of thoughts that the person could be my grandparents or someone I love. So I think I have ruled out being a Geriatric Nurse and I think that experience just put the icing on the cake for me. Kudos to the nurses who can do that type of work. It is very hard and very stressful emotionally because you get attached to the pts since they have been there for a long time.

I hope everyone’s week was great and you are enjoying the weekend. I know I am…it’s a good time to rest. This week has been really busy for me but it’s over now and it starts all over Monday. First of all, I would like to say THANK YOU to all my blogging friends who wished me a Happy Birthday. I love you all and it made my day 🙂

I had the best birthday! Everyone in my family made it very special and I couldn’t ask for better family members. Let’s see…Wednesday, Ben took me out to Ryan’s buffet which was really good. Then he took me shopping at Ross. They have such great deals at Ross. Get this….I got a sweater, top, and a pair of Levi jeans for only $32.00.

That is a great deal considering that the places in the Mall charge that for one shirt. Also, the jeans I got retailed for $40.00 alone. Ross is the best place in the world!! I don’t go shopping that much for clothes, but when I do, I always go there. Ben also got me a bunch of other stuff like: a heating pad (ladies you know why everyone needs one of those hint: cramps), an apron ( I have been always needing one because I always get my clothes dirty when I cook), mouth wash (lol), socks, those Capri Sun drinks (I love taking those to school with me), Gain Laundry detergrent (long story), and a bunch of other stuff.

Then Friday I went out to eat with my family for my birthday. We went to this Mexican resturant called Aztec…it had a buffet which I thought would be good, but I got to say I wasn’t too impressed. Much of the food was cold and looked like it has been setting out for a while. Let’s just say I probably won’t be going back there. Everything I got from my family I racked up about $140 which is great!!
