What is the ATI TEAS Exam for Nursing Students? What Study Guide to Buy to Help Study for the TEAS Exam?

The TEAS exam is a test made by ATI that is taken by nursing students as a pre-admission exam. TEAS, which is short for Test of Essential Academic Skills, is used by nursing schools to help assess nursing students knowledge in math, science, english and reading. A study guide is recommended for helping you study for the TEAS exam. A study guide can be purchased online which is usually cheaper than most on-campus college bookstores.

What Type of Material is on the TEAS exam?

This exams covers basic subjects that the nursing student learned about in high school. It is sort of similar to an ACT or SAT exam a high school senior must take in order to get into college. However, the TEAS exam is different in regards that it assesses how well the nursing student will do in nursing school based on the nursing student’s TEAS score. The subjects covered on the TEAS exam and the number of questions in each area are:

  • English: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling. There are 55 questions.
  • Math: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions & decimals, algebraic equations, percentages and ratio/proportions. There are 45 questions.
  • Science: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge of reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, basic physical principles, and general science. There are 30 questions.
  • Reading: This section covers the nursing student’s knowledge paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions. There are 40 questions.

How Many Questions are on the TEAS Exam?

The TEAS exam usually has 170 questions on it. The section above covers how many questions are in each subject.

How many hours does it take to complete the TEAS Exam?

The nursing student is usually allowed 3 1/2 hours to complete the exam. The TEAS exam is usually administered on a computer but some nursing school may still administer it by paper. Check with your local nursing school.

What Study Guide to Use to Study for the TEAS exam?

Most people need a study guide to help you prepare for the TEAS exam. The study guide helps provide you with a refresher of material you may have forgot you learned in high school.

Let’s face it if you don’t use fractions and algebraic equations every day you are going to forget how to solve them. A study guide will help point you in the right directions on what material you need to study and remind you how to solve those wonderful algebraic equations.
