What can and can’t LPNs exactly do?

I’m confused on what LPNs can and can’t do. Sorry if this question has already been answered , just curious! Thank you!

    Kenna,

This is a great question because it is confusing sometimes on what a LPN can and can’t do. First it is important to note that each state within the US varies on what they allow a LPN to do. Also, some states may require the LPN to take a class and pass an exam before they can perform a certain skill and this would deem the LPN competent to do the skills (while other LPNs would haven’t completed the class would not be allowed to perform the skills).

Here is a general list on what a LPN is generally NOT allowed to do:

    -Administer IV drugs
-Completing a health assessment (can perform the assessment but a RN must sign off behind the LPN)
-Develop nursing plan of care (RN must sign off)
-Taking verbal orders for a doctor
    -Administering Blood products
-Pronounce time of death with a MD order (a RN can only do this is some states)
-Access or flush PICC lines, subq ports or any type of central line
-Administer Total Parental Nutrition, insulin drips or cardiac drips
-Give chemo medications or administer dialysis

I’m sure there are some more minor things but that is the biggest things a LPN is not allowed to do.
