I have been a restaurant and retail manager for over 30 years and have recently started CUNY with the goal of being an RN. By the time I complete the courses and testing I will be 52. I believe because of my age I will have to do well to get consideration in the employment market but aside from that there is a glaring issue.
I have had a misdemeanor conviction at 25 and a misdemeanor DUI at 35. I am a good man and have been a more than competent administrator throughout the years. I seek meaning to my life other than making fortunes grow for already affluent people and seek security in my life as I get older.
I believe that caring for others will give me the meaning I seek and the job in and of itself will provide me with the security I need moving forward. I am now 49, will these convictions preclude me from obtaining an RN license and employment in this field?

Hello David,
The answer to this question it varies due to a number of factors. You won’t have any problems getting into nursing school but you may have a probably getting issued a nursing license by your state board of nursing. In addition, (depending on the nature of the Misdemeanor conviction and DUI) when your potential employer does a background check because hospitals are strict on this, you may run into some issues.
I would first contact your state’s board of nursing and ask them this question because it is really a case by case type of thing. I would make sure you can get issued a license before you do apply to the program.

Contact your board and explain it to them and see what they say. You will need to detail both misdemeanors because it totally depends on the nature of them. Some states are more stricter than others. I wouldn’t give up hope. Let us know what they say.
