Can an LVN be employed as ADON in a nursing home?

   Hey Debra! That is a great question and I had to do some researching because I am interested in the answer as well. Many states vary on what they allow LVNs to do and you know Texas, they have their own set of rules. I was researching it and apparently it is very common (especially in Long Term Care Facilities) for LVNs to hold assistant director of nursing positions. I was surprised at this because how can a LVN give orders to an RN. Because as an ADON you know that the LPN will have RNs under her so that is interesting. But to answer your question, yes I think it possible. What does everyone else think?

   Debra, does this LVN have another degree like a bachelors in business administration or some other type of degree? I have known of cases where a LPN has entered a management type job because they had experience in that role.

   Jamie to answer your question about the LVN being over the RNs….maybe it is set up in a way that the DON who is an RN takes responsibility for the ADON actions (who is the LVN) and that is how they allow the LVN to be over RNs. Just a guess but I bet that is how it works.

   Yes it can happen but rarely. It depends on who you know and your job experience. A new LPN out of school or a LPN with only a couple years of experience won’t get this type of job.

   This might be a dumb question but what is a ADON and is LVN the same as an LPN?

   It stands for Assistant Director of Nursing and yes, LVN is the same as an LPN. Btw that isn’t a dumb question 🙂
