What is a Home Health Clinical Rotation for a Nursing Student Like in Nursing School?

Thursday was my home health day rotation. I enjoyed it! I can definitely see myself doing that type of work after I get some experience as a RN…… probably about 10 years down the road. I think you have to have some major experience to be a home health nurse because you are on your own and make the calls.

I don’t think a newbie nurse like me would do to well. I need some experience under my belt first. What I really liked about it was that you got to see people in their home setting and it is completely different than that of a hospital’s setting.

Home Health Clinical Rotation

We visited three patients and let me tell you most of the caregivers I seen were just awesome. You could tell they provided the best care for their family member….way better care than they would receive in a nursing home. For instance, this one woman was the caregiver of her husband and he had the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

I could tell that it was hard on her emotionally seeing her husband that way but she stands by him and is an awesome caretaker. My mom works in a nursing home and tells me horror stories of how husbands or wives will divorce their loved ones when they get that disease and never come back to visit them.

I don’t know their explanation for this but I could never ever do something like that to my husband. People just don’t take their wedding vowels serious anymore….I suppose they forgot the part about “for better or worst or in sickness or health”. However, some people just can’t handle it and think that is the only way out!

I wonder what a nursing salary is for a home health nurse?
