HOBET Exam Study Guide and Tips | How to Study for HOBET Exam for Nursing Students in Nursing School

The HOBET Exam, which is short for Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test, is an entrance exam that is required by some colleges for health care majors to pass before they enter into their program of study. The type of students who usually have to take this test include nursing students, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and dental hygienist etc.

Why do Schools Require you to Take the HOBET Exam?

This test is a tool used by universities to help them decide if the student is ready for their program. The test gives a good indicator on how well the student will do in their program of study. For instance, the HOBET Exam evaluates your basic math and reading skills, test taking skills, stress level, social interaction profile, and learning styles.

All of these areas need to be proficient in order for a student to successfully graduate their field of study. However, if a student is not proficient in one of these areas the university may require the student to take remedial classes to help them better prepare.

What type of Material is on the HOBET Exam?

The HOBET exam test the student on many different areas but only two subject are the most important, Math and Reading. Below are the areas to be expected on the HOBET Exam and number of questions:

  • Basic Math (60 questions):  Basic Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Fractions, Basic Math, Intermediate Math, and Percents and Ratios
  • Reading Skills (33 questions): You are tested on your ability to effectively read material at the difficulty of medical/surgical textbooks for health occupation professionals. In addition, your reading speed and accuracy of comprehension is evaluated.
  • Test Taking Skills (30 questions)
  • Stress Level Skills (45 questions)
  • Social Interaction Skills (30 questions)
  • Learning Style Skills (50 questions)

What do I have to score on the HOBET Exam to Pass?

A score of 56 is usually the required score by universities to be considered as passing. However, each section is scored differently and most universities only care about the math and reading scores.

The average HOBET math score is a 59 and a score of 39 or lower is considered a low math score meaning you failed it and need to improve.

The average HOBET reading score is a 54 and a score of 39 or lower is considered a low reading score meaning you failed it and need to improve.

Your composite score is the average your scored on the math and reading section. Most universites require a 56 or higher score in order to be considered for admission.

What Happens if I score low or fail the HOBET Exam?

If you fail the HOBET Exam or score below a 56, your school may require you to take remedial classes to help you better prepare. In addition, you may be required to retake the HOBET exam until you reach the school’s desired score.

How to study for the HOBET Exam and what Study Guide to use?

In order to prepare for the HOBET exam, it is recommended you polish up your math and reading skills. The reason most people fail the HOBET exam is not because they don’t know how to solve algebraic equations or how to interpet a paragraph, it is because they don’t use it everyday of their life and they forget how to do it.
