Can a Single Mom of 3 Kids Make it Through Nursing School and Am I too Old for Nursing School?

I have always wanted to be a registered nurse since I was a teenager. But life happened. I got married then divorced. I have three kids who are ages 6,8, and 12 years old. I am also 39 years old. I am a single mom. I work full-time and am the main provider for my children. I have a question for the older students out there with kids. Can I make it through nursing school with 3 kids and will I fit in with the younger students since I am 39. I am not worried about financing nursing school (I have that covered) but concerned about being able to put in the time to pass.

I was 35 when I graduated from nursing school…just a little bit younger than you but old even to be called an adult student. I didn’t feel like I didn’t “fit in” around the younger 20 somethings. I think you do better in school when you are older because you are serious about, probably because we are paying for it, and you are interested in learning. Nothing against the younger students out there but many didn’t take it seriously. I can’t comment on the children issue because I am married and my husband helped out but I have a friend who had a similar situation as you and she did great and we graduated together. Hope I helped you a little bit.

Wait till your kids graduate high school. They deserve a mom that can be there for them, you can never get back that time with them. Nursing school is extremely demanding, you think you can do it all but you can’t, something has to give and it will be your kids, all they will see is a stressed out, half crazed, sleep deprived mom.
