Order of Operations | ATI TEAS V Math Practice Quiz

Solving Order of Operations on the ATI TEAS V, ACT, HESI, or SAT exam: The ATI TEAS exam is made-up of a math section. Many students dread taking the math section of the ATI exam because they are not good at math. However, practice makes perfect for successfully passing the ATI TEAS math section.

What type of math is on the ATI TEAS exam? The ATI TEAS math section test participants on order of operations, ratios, fractions, metric conversation etc. Over the next weeks, RegisteredNurseRN.com will be developing free TEAS practice math quizzes to help you prepare for the exam.

This ATI TEAS math practice quiz will test you ability to solve order of operations.

NOTE: In the quiz below you will see ^2 or ^3…this represents exponents when solving the problem. So, for example. 2^2 means 2 to the second power (2 X 2). 2^3 means 2 to the third power (2 X 2 X 2).

Order of Operations

You must solve the problems using a specific order. You solve the parentheses first (starting with the inner parenthesis), then exponents, then multiplication or division, and then addition or subtraction.

A simple mnemonic to remember this is PEMA. You can remember it by memorizing the simple sentence: Please Eat My Apples!

  • P=Parentheses first
  • E=Exponents second
  • M=Multiplication or division next
  • A=Addition or subtraction last

When there are parentheses within a parentheses, you solve the innermost parentheses first. When you have a problem where all of the parts are within the same category (ie, addition and subtraction), you work from left to right.

For example, in the following problem, you’d simply work left to right since multiplication and division both come in the same order of operations (they are in the same category): 4 ÷ 2 X 3 X 6.
