Hello my name is Claudette and I am currently taking pre-reqs for nursing school. I am undecided on whether or not I should apply to the LPN or the ADN program.
I am currently taking A & P I now and will be taking A&P II next semester. I’m hoping to take Microbiology during the summer of 2015. So my question is since I’m already taking A &P I and will be taking A&P II next semester and microbiology afterwards, would it be better if I applied for the LPN program or the ADN. I’m so confused. Can anyone help me out Please?

Welcome Claudette!
I seen your question and hoped I could help. Since you are taking A & P and microbiology, I suggest you go for the ADN (assoicates degree in nursing). Generally A&P and Micro are pre-req courses for becoming a registered nurse (however, some LPN programs may require them).
Are you wanting to be a LPN or RN? Both are great careers. However, you will have more job opportunities if you become a RN instead of a LPN…plus you will make more money. The LPN takes one year to complete and the ADN takes 2 years.
Are you currently enrolled at a college with a nursing program? If you are I would contact one of the advisors to help guide you on when you should apply because every nursing program is different in their requirements. If you plan on transferring I would still contact an advisor at the school you plan on transferring to for the requirements to enter the nursing program.
Did that help clarify things?

Yes it did and no I am not in a nursing program now, but I am going to apply and I wanted to know exactly which one is best the LPN program doesn’t require micro or A n P. I just wanted to know if I should go for the LPN or RN program and if I was to go into the ADN how long would it take for me to finish. Thank you Patty is it anyway you can help me out with this question?

Glad I could help 🙂 I personally think you should do the RN program. As a registered nurse you are going to be making more money and have many more opportunities for employment. The scope of practice for a LPN is very limited. Overall, I think the RN program is the best hands down.
If you went for an ADN (since you are already completing many of the pre-reqs) it will probably take you about 1.5 years…may be a year (I’m not sure what other classes you have taken). You are ahead of the game a bit since you are already taking A&P and micro.
I found this good article on ADN and BSN nursing degrees that you may want to look at: https://www.registerednursern.com/adn-or-bsn-nursing-degree-what-is-the-difference-between-adn-bsn-programs/
and just to give you an idea about what a LPN does here is another great article: https://www.registerednursern.com/lpn-lvn-licensed-practical-nurse-vocational-nurse-education-job-and-salary-information/
Hope this helps and I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
