I am currently an ASN nursing student. I plan to further my education towards becoming a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Is it best to attend an RN-MSN program (with an associates degree) or get a Bachelor’s degree prior to pursuing a Doctorate in nursing?
For example, Vanderbilt University accepts nurses with an associates degree into their graduate nursing programs. However, I noticed that some institutions require a Bachelor’s degree.

Hey Brittany!
Thanks for question and welcome to the forum 🙂 I think it really depends on what you want to do because both options are great. Personally, I would go for the Vanderbilt program (not only is Vanderbilt a TERRIFIC school…it has a great reputation) and it is rare that a nursing program offers RN to MSN without requiring the bachelor’s degree first. Another, plus is that you only have to apply to one program and then when you are done with your MSN you can get your DNP…..instead of having to go from ADN, to BSN, to MSN, and then DNP. I think that is great Vanderbilt has that program…I wasn’t even aware of it.
I would ask yourself how fast you want to get done and if Vanderbilt’s program is something you want to do. I wish you the best of luck 🙂
Sincerely,
Sara
