It is generally assumed that if there is an emergency or disaster and a nurse is present that nurse will be able to assist with patient care. Nursing schools don’t even provide basic first aid training for their students.
Why do you think this essential basic training is not being provided?

Hey Alex,
Before I could start clinicals I was required to be CPR and first aid certified. My nursing school didn’t provide it…it was provided through a local hospital.
I think the reason they don’t is because it is a pain to hire someone to teach it and it is easier for the student to obtain certification themselves.
In nursing school, we are taught first aid and all that stuff but we just don’t get a certification.

Yeah many nursing programs dont have a specific classes for first aid that they require. You usually have to do it on your own because it is a requirement for you to work in a hospital doing clinicals. But my school does offer a regular first aid course for everyone as an elective. So technically a pre-nursing student could get first aid and cpr certification that way.
I agree it is weird most nursing schools dont. I wish they did. It would make things easier thats for sure.
