Hey Everyone,
I received another “ask me a question” and this question comes from Holly….here is what she asked:
“OK. I am working on my associates in nursing. I took the NET as an entrance test . I have to take the HESI this fall (in my 2nd year). I haven’t heard anyone in the program talk about having to take it a 3rd time though…..
My question is this: is there any math on the HESI as there was on the NET? It seemed like the NET had tons of math on it, such as percents and fractions….and I couldn’t’t use a calculator. I am wondering if I should spend time brushing up on my basic math skills since I am so spoiled with a calculator.
Another question: Are there any study guides specific to the HESI, or would any NCLEX review do just fine??I have the summer off from school and would like to really focus on this test. Many students do not pass this test at our school and have to retake it!! I don’t want to have to worry about it!
Thank you.
Holly”
Holly thanks for your great questions! The HESI exam doesn’t have as much math on it as the NET(may be 2-4 question). Also, it’s not fractions or percentages. It is drug calculation questions. For instance, the doctor prescribes 120 mg of Kalex and on hand you have a 60 mg per tab. How many tabs will you give? Then answer is two. Those are the types of math problems. Also, HESI has a built in calculator you can use so don’t sweat not having a calculator. I suggest practicing your drug calculation problems to help you prepare for it.
In order to study for it you can just buy a regular NCLEX review book which will work just fine or you can buy the book made by the HESI test company which can be purchased off of Amazon.com at a great price (this is where I bought mine). It is about $50….I think. I used the HESI book made by the company and a regular NCLEX review book made by Saunders (its blue). I read all of the HESI hints and the end of the chapter questions and passed first try. It is really a good book. However, a plain NCLEX review book will work. Check out my HESI study log that I used to study for it.
If you truly study for the test and practice about 2500 questions you will do fine. Good luck Holly and I hope you pass first try!
