What are the hardest classses in nursing school? I decided that I wanted to share what the top three hardest nursing classes have been for me so far. If you are in nursing school you will probably agree with me on these, but everything mostly depends on your professors teaching style etc.
The Most Difficult Courses in Nursing School
I have taken a bunch of nursing courses, and out of those these three stick out in my mind: Pathophysiology, Foundations of Nursing, and Pediatrics. The reason these courses were so hard was because they covered so much material in a short amount of time.
Why are classes in Nursing School hard?
During my first year of nursing school I had Pathophysiology and boy wasn’t it an eye opener of what was about to come through out my nursing school career. The only good thing I can say about this course is that it taught me how to study in nursing school. You can be the smartest person in the world and have your nursing skills down, but if you don’t have a keen way on how to study, then if you want to survive in nursing school you’ll have to develop one.
Another thing that made this class hard what that it covered EVER system in the body like: heart, respiratory, urinary, immune, nervous, skin, reproductive and almost all of the major disease that can effect these systems. Not only did you have to apply the anatomy and physiology you learn back at the beginning of school but you now had to add disease processes to it that were on the cellular level.
Foundations of Nursing was my next hardest course. I had this course in the fall of 07 which would make it this time last year. The reason this class was so hard what that it taught you all of the basic nursing skills and the reasoning behind it. That doesn’t sound too hard but if you think about every nursing skill and the reason it is done and what all can go wrong and how to recognize it when it is going wrong/what to do about it….. that makes it hard.
Plus my professor’s tests were hard (by the way I thought she was great). She had nothing but critical thinking questions on her test, which are not like the fact base questions I was used to taking. Critical thinking questions are what will be on our boards to get us our licenses. The good thing that came out of this class was that it improved my testing taking skills majorly.
Then it was Pediatrics….believe it or not I just didn’t like this class. I really thought I was going to but after I got done with it I was like Peds nursing is not for me. Kudos to you nurses who do Peds…you guys are smart cookies. I found this class to be hard because it was like taking Patho & Foundations together.
Children are different when it comes to nursing, especially when it comes to drug administration and how you use your nursing skills. Plus they have their own genre of diseases like RSV, impetigo, croup, congenital heart problems and much more. If decide to be a Peds nurse you have to have the passion for it! I think the reason I thought it was hard was because I was not interested in it like I was other courses I have taken. The good thing that came out of this course was that it showed me I would be a bad Regisered Nurse RN for the peds population.
All of those were my hardest nursing classes so far but lets see how this semester goes before I can say the hardest nursing classes I have even taken.
