Hey Everyone,
I received another “ask me a question”…by the way you all are super good at this asking stuff….I love it 🙂 This question comes from Erica and here is what she asked:
“Hi,
Let me first just say I love your site and I think it’s great you are helping answer some of these questions that are keeping us future Registered Nurse RN up at night, lol. I am getting enrolled now at a teaching hospital for my RN, I wasn’t really that into high school so my grades really weren’t that great and my gpa was rather low… I am missing a lot of the math and bio classes that I should have had in high school and now I am rushing to finish them up on nursingabc.com which is really convenient If anyone is from South Western PA you can take your algebra, biology, and chemistry (hence the abc) online and you can even do your labs this way instead of going to a community college you pay a lot less to and they are accepted as your pre-reqs… anyways back to my question if I didn’t have such great grades in high school but in a post secondary school I maintained a 3.33 do you think I will be able to handle nursing school and will they consider me to be a good candidate? I have wanted to get into nursing since I was a little girl I am 24 years old now and I have a phlebotomy cert as well, I really love calming patients down and making them feel more comfortable and letting them know it’s going to be alright. I just hope I am smart enough.
Thanks so much for you help!!!!!!”
Nursing School GPA Requirements
Erica, thank you so much for visiting and I love that you find my nurse blog helpful.that means a lot to me 🙂 The program you mentioned called the abc sounds awesome…I wish they had something like that here in TN that would help out so many people.
Now to your question: I don’t know what the GPA requirements are for the school that you will be going to but I can give you my experience from my college with the GPA stuff and admission. At my college they did NOT take my high school grades into consideration for me to get into nursing school….. only my pre-requisite grades that I received prior to admission to nursing school. I’m in a four-year nursing program. The first two years consisted of taking university core classes (math, English, speech..etc) and then when I was done taking those classes I applied to nursing school (which would take 2 more years to complete). So they accepted everyone based on their GPA up to that point with the core classes. However, in order for me to get into the university (not nursing school) they required like a high school GPA of 2.? (can’t remember but it was a 2. something) and a decent ACT score but this was to get into the university so I could take my pre-requisites so I could apply to nursing school. The lowest GPA I think they allowed to get into my nursing school was a 3.0.
Your GPA of 3.3 is great and yes I definitely think you can handle nursing school. I know people say “oh nursing is so hard” but really it isn ‘t that bad. If you are serious about it and put the time and effort into it you should have no problem. I am not even close to being a genius and I am getting through it (almost done….. only 2 more months). I wouldn’t worry about how you did in high school only concentrate on now!
If I were you I would call the hosptial where you are getting your RN and ask what they go by in order to get accepted then gofrom there. I wish you much luck and hope everything works out for you. That is awesome you already have a phlebotomoy cert….you will excel in the IV & drawing blood part.
Good luck and keep me posted on what you find out!
