Hey all, I’m 26, and definitely love working in a faster paced environment, unfortunately on the other spectrums fast paced specialties butt heads. Any advice on a fast paced specialty like the ER, but with a less emotional impact, such as wound care.
To summarize, I want to be moving but don’t believe I can emotionally handle a critical condition child.

Great question, Patrick! I totally understand what you are saying. I suggest you look into specialties where you don’t have to deal with emotional attachment to a patient. Are you looking for a setting that isn’t stressful but you will be busy or a setting where you won’t see children critically injured (but you want to deal with critical situations)? Also, what personality type are you? I’m an ISFJ so I like slower paced settings.
For example, try to pick a specialty where patients come and go quickly and you are always getting a new influx of patients. Great nursing specialties that are fast-paced and don’t allow you to get emotionally involved are cardiac cath lab (very fast-paced and you deal with critical situation sometimes), PACU (recover surgery patients), surgery holding areas, or of course floor nursing…it is fast-paced.
However, if you are not looking for critical situations wound care, non-invasive cardiology (stress lab), school nursing, medical surgical floor nursing, observations units, clinic work, nurse educator, and home health nursing are just to name a few. I hope that helps.
