Hey Everyone,
I received another “ask me a question” and this question comes for Leena. Here is what was asked:
“I took the exit hesi three times and scored 635,648,644. Since I do not have a minimum 700 in the three attempts I have to repeat my clinical preceptorship class at the end of march and then take hesi again. I attended the graduation ceremony this dec 2008 but I was unaware of the fact that failing hesi will not allow me to graduate that means it’s a fake graduation. Anyway, any advice for me….lost all my confidence…had straight A’s in all my prerequisites and decent scores throughout the program. Moved to texas for my husband’s job but have to go back to Florida to repeat this class. Will wait for ur reply.
Thanks”
I Failed the Hesi Test, What Should I Do?
Leena, thanks for your question and first of all I just want to say because you failed the HESI test doesn’t mean you are not smart and it doesn’t gauge what type of nurse you are going to be. It is just another one of those silly standardized tests that universities make us take.
I could write all day on how the HESI stinks and how it shouldn’t hold students back from getting their diploma but it wouldn’t change the fact that we still have to do it. I think the HESI should just be used as an assessment tool of how we will do on the NCLEX the big test to become a Registered Nurse …not a must-have to graduate. I am going to take the exit HESI for the first time March 27, 2009 (we have to score at least a 850) and I have only three times to take it and if I don’t pass it I get to attend a “fake” graduation ceremony too but then I have to keep taking it until I pass.
All I can say to you is that you are not alone. They are so many nursing students out there this happens to. How did you study for the HESI? Our school suggest doing around 3000-4000 NCLEX questions before we take it. I also recommend getting the new HESI book…it has a lot of helpful “hesi hints” in it that I found were on my mid-curricular HESI that I took last April in 08. I can definitely see why you are frustrated because of having to travel back and forth from Texas to Florida.
I suggest when you are trying to study for it that you look back at the print out HESI gives you on the categories you missed and focus on those areas. If you don’t have this print out you can go to HESI’s website and log-in to get this information. I suggest focusing on Med. Surgical because it seems like they test a lot on this category.
Also, just to let you know I have some friends who failed the exit HESI three times (passed on the fourth) but passed the NCLEX-RN the first time. They were super nervous about taking the NCLEX because of the HESI…but they passed NCLEX the first try so don’t let that get your stressed. I wish I would have already taken the exit HESI so I could give you some pointers but right now I’m nervous and in the dark about it. I will be praying for both of us and hope we pass! I hope everything works out for you. Please keep me up-dated! And keep checking back for more nursing school tips.
Until next time,
Sarah 😉
