I am planning to go to nursing school and eventually be employed here in Utah. However I am concerned about a Class A Misdemeanor conviction that remains on my record. It is 12 yrs. old and there is no re-offense. I am wondering if this would be an issue in being admitted into nursing school and being employed. I would greatly appreciate your advice.

This is always a gray area when it comes to getting into nursing school and a nursing job because every state board is different. For example, Utah may have different standards than the nursing board in Texas. Another factor is the nature of the misdemeanor. Was it just something small like fraud or did it deal with assault or drugs? If it dealt with physically assaulting or some type of violence/drugs you may have trouble because as a nurse you take care of people and they are really strict on hiring people with a violent or drug history.
You really need to make sure you can get a job after nursing school because you don’t want to go through nursing school and work your butt off and get told you can’t apply for a nursing license because of your misdemeanor. I highly, highly suggest you call or email the board of nursing in Utah. Here is their contact information:

It is dependent on if Utah BON will allow you to apply for a nursing license after you graduate from nursing school. You probably won’t have trouble getting accepted to nursing school but getting a license and job is another story. I personally think only felonies should count not misdemeanors. Everything is a misdemeanor now a days. Please let us know what the Utah board of nursing says……
