Usually during the first two years of nursing school you take basic nursing school classes like: Fundamentals of Nursing, Health Assessment, Communication for Health Professional, Introduction to the Nursing Profession, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology..these classes help lay the foundation for you before you start clinicals. You will also have to participate in skills labs. In the skill labs you will learn and be tested on basic nursing skills such as (giving injections, foley catheter insertion, CPR, bed baths, full body assessment, taking blood pressures etc).
It really depends on how your nursing program is set-up but during the second year you start to have clinicals. This is where you go to the healthcare settings and work under a nurse and your clinical instructor. You get to participate in the care of patients and see what each nursing specialty is like. Generally, with your clinicals you will have to attend a lecture class that compliments the clinicals courses. For instance, you will have to take a Maternity Nursing lecture courses while you complete your maternity OB clinicals at the hospital.
The first two years of nursing school will require a lot of studying and going to classes. Then when you are in your last year, you will get to focus on clinicals.

Are you talking about the BSN (bachelor program) or ADN (associate program) because the first two years may be different for each program?
