This week I got to start many IVs and insert a supra pubic Foley catheter. Okay this week once again was really busy and a little stressful but it’s over and I am very happy about that. I have so much to do that I just wanna scream but I keep telling myself that this time next year I won’t even be in school and I will finally be a Registered Nurse.
So I am going to keep gritting my teeth and get through it. I just can’t believe it is already October…wow!! I can’t wait for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas…all are fun times.
Starting IV as a Nursing Student and Inserting a Supra Pubic Catheter
Well this week like I said was busy but I got to do some cool stuff at clinicals. Tuesday was my IV day where I was with a nurse and went around the hospital starting or changing IVs. I was really glad I got to do this because my IV skills were rusty.
I feel more competent about it but I feel I still need more practice. I think when I get a handle on it I will feel better about it but it feels like I need about 2 more extra hands when I am doing it because you have to reach here for that and there for this all while you are holding slight pressure on the catheter so you won’t have a bloody mess.
If you don’t put pressure on the catheter while it is in the vein, blood will just pour out of it and go everywhere.
The next coolest thing I got to do was insert a Supra-pubic foley catheter. It is just like a regular catheter that goes into the penis but instead it goes into a hole that the doctor puts in above your bladder.
It looks extremely painful to me…I rather have it the other way. My patient said it was painful and that he was going to talk to his doctor about getting it put in the other place.
I had to do it as a sterile procedure which was awesome because I got to use my skills I learned in lab. It was the first time I got to insert a foley catheter and I am so glad I got to.
I had a test on Friday, which was hard, and I just hope I did good on it. It was a shocker because I thought it wasn’t going to be that bad but it was.
I also have a test Monday which I haven’t even studied for….but I am going to once I get done here. It is for my population based nursing care class which in my opinion in a huge waste of my time. I don’t like that class 🙁 Wish me luck because I need a lot of it.
I hope everyone has an awesome week! Until next time.
Sarah 😉
