I received another “ask me a question” and this one comes from Annie. Here is what she asked:
“Hello, I need some idea of how to answer these questions on my nursing application, they only required 300 words for each question, and I don’t know how to make it short and clear!!:
1. describe the steps you have taken to investigate the profession of nursing and how the investigation has helped with the decision to pursue nursing as a career?
2. what individual and academic strengths do you possess that will guide you in your pursuit of a nursing degree?
thanks for your help.”
Nursing School Application Tips
Annie, thanks for your question and congrats on getting to this place in your life. Nursing is awesome! You will love it! Let me see if I can give you some suggestions:
300 words is like a very large paragraph. What I would do is make a small outline of what you want to cover in each question and then type up everything you want to say about the question. I suggest using Microsoft Word (or some type of word program) so it can count the words for you. After you type up everything you want to say do a word count. If it is over 300 words take out some sentences that you would consider as a filler sentence that doesn’t add anything to your question.
Now regarding question 1: First of all that question is a little wordy and somewhat hard to understand so I will try rephrasing it to help you answer it. To me the question is asking: How did you come to the decision that nursing was for you and how has the ways you decided impacted your decision? To answer this you could talk about…..that nursing has always been a calling since you were little…..your mother/grandmother was a nurse and you’ve seen how they touched other lives…..nursing to you is the only field out there that you can help others and experience the different aspects of life through either helping deliver a baby to being with someone on their death bed to help comfort them before they take their last breaths. Ask yourself why did you choose to do nursing out of everything else you could have done….then explain how this decision will affect your nursing career.
Now regarding question 2: Talk about your strong desire to care for others, how you possess critical thinking skills (big thing you need to have in nursing as a Registered Nurse), great people skills, positive attitude, you believe in teamwork, you strongly follow your ethical principles (such as autonomy, beneficence, justice, nonmalificence, veracity…etc) <–big part of the nursing code of conduct. Then talk about your academic strengths (great grades, prepared for class..etc).
Good luck on your nursing school applications….I hope that you get in and this helped out a little bit. Keep me updated! If you need anything else don’t hesitate to hit me up!
Until next time,
