I am a NYS licensed RN and want to know what is the process involved in how do I go about getting endorsement in Puerto Rico? I tried getting information from NURSYS and the site was not helpful.
Thanks
Maddie

Hey Maddie!
I hope I can help you out with this question. Sorry, you have been having trouble getting help from the other website you mentioned.
Your nursing license in NYS will not transfer to Puerto Rico like how it does in the United States among other states. However, once you get to Puerto Rico you will need to apply for what is called a provisional nursing license from the “Junta”. After you get your provisional license you will need to apply to what is called the “colegio de Enfermeria” and here they will give you a ID card. This ID card will allow you to gain nursing employment until you pass the Revalida (the nursing licensing exam in Puerto Rico).
You will have this until provisional license until you take Puerto Rico’s licensing exam. I heard it is like NCLEX but easier. They offer it in both English and Spanish.
I hope this helps clarify some stuff.

Hi Lydia,
Thank you for your response! Do you have the contact information for any of these agencies. I tried calling various phone numbers and there is no answer or simply are incorrect. What is the length of time allowed to practice with The Provisional Nursing license, before you pass the NCLEX exam? OMG I took this exam many moons ago and the thought of taking it again is nerve wrecking.

Maddie,
Glad I could help! I’m not quite sure how good the provisional license is good for. From what I hear it takes a while for to them to give you, your “real” Puerto Rico nursing license once your pass the exam (up to a year) so I guess it is good for a while.
I was doing some research and found this document for the provisional license (can’t read Spanish…hope you can….but I used a translator and it is may be what you are looking for):
http://www.salud.gov.pr/Pages/Home.aspx
I don’t know what number you called but here is the number for the state board of nursing for puerto rico: 787.725.7506
Also, their website is somewhat helpful. There website is: http://www.salud.gov.pr/Pages/Home.aspx
I hope this helps you out.
