12 Hour Nursing Shifts- My First Experience | How my Senior Practicum is Going…

Hey Everyone,

I hope every one’s week is starting out with a bang. I keep forgetting its Monday because my days feel a little thrown off. It is probably because I pulled clinical hours this weekend.

What are 12 Hour Shifts Like in Nursing?

I worked Saturday 7a-7p and Sunday 7a-7p. I have already completed 24 of my 240 hours…I’m getting there slowly but surely. It went by faster than I thought it would. I have noticed that anytime your mind stays busy, and you are constantly doing something, time seems to pass quickly. Fortunately, this is true in nursing too.

I have never really pulled a 12 hour shift at the hosptial because all of my clinicals have been only 8-10 hours long.  The only complaint I had was my feet and heels were KILLING me when 7pm rolled around. I have even been wearing support stockings and Dr. Schoals foot things to make my shoes more comfortable. May be I need to update my Dr. Schoals because I have had them for a while but today my feel for great! Update: These things really help a lot. If your feet hurt after nursing, get these things and they will feel better. I have them in our nursing supplies store by Amazon.com.

My Senior Practicum is going great! I have an AWESOME preceptor and work with great Nurses. My preceptor is a great teacher and I have learned so much in the two days I have been there….it’s actually refreshing to know that I’m learning stuff. I have given LOTS of medications….finally I got to give Lovenox & Heparin Subq. Lovenox & Heparin are blood thinners given to help prevent blood clots aka DVTs (deep vein thrombosis)..etc. Also, it seems like everyone is diabetic so I gave lots of insulin. I really like the sliding scale…it makes giving insulin so easy. I’m getting good at all of these Subq shots (shots give in the subcutaneous fat). Today I’m off and then tomorrow which is Tuesday I work 7a-7p. Today I am playing catch up…I had to complete my clinical contract and email it to my teacher, I scheduled a CPR class, I’m fixing to do an assignment that is due Wednesday, and then I’m going to study for HESI. I think I’m so much more productive when I am under deadlines and pressure.

Well I’m off to eat some sugar cookies that just got done cooking. I hope everyone is doing well! Until next time,

Sarah :-)
