Hey Everyone,
I received another “ask me a question” on my nurse blog. This question comes from Brittany and here is what she ask:
“Hello,
I am in my first year of college and I am stuck between deciding upon two majors: teaching and neonatal nursing. I would really love to become a Registered Nurse RN but the only thing stopping me is I have a pretty big problem with needles. I know I can get over using needles on other people, but I don’t want needles in me. I heard that in nursing school you test on a partner and they test on you. I was just wondering if this was true and if so, is there anyway out of being tested on?
Thanks,
Brittany”
Do You Draw Blood in Nursing School on Students?
When I first started college, I was also torn between becoming a teacher or a nurse. I have also found that many of my friends who are in nursing school with me also contemplated on becoming a teacher….must be a nursing and teaching thing. Either one you pick would be great! They both have their ups and downs! Now on to your question…do you have to practice using needles on your partner in nursing school?
The answer from my experience is No. I HATE being stuck with needles….but I can do it to others all day long because it doesn’t hurt me lol. When I learned to draw blood or use needles we practiced on fake dummies. At my university in the past they did allow students to practice on other students when drawing blood or starting IV but they stopped allowing students to do this. The reason was due to liability issues. However, before I took the class on drawing blood I heard that we had to practice on our partners and I didn’t like that idea but it turned out we didn’t. So what you might be hearing could be a misunderstanding.
I suggest that you go and ask some professor in the nursing program if they do this and make your decision from there. Also, if your school does allow other students to practice on each other I would simply ask your professor if you could test out of it differently. Many professors will work with you based on your needs and I don’t see why they would “make” you.
Good luck with everything and tell me what you find out! Thanks for your question and if you ever have any more questions don’t hesitate to hit me up!
